The General Nurses Group is affiliated to Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA). The members are Clinical Nurses based in the hospitals and clinics. There was the need to form this group to bring nurses together to educate themselves in current practices to become better nurses.


The group was formed in the later part of June, 1990 and inaugurated at Korle-Bu Midwifery Training School. The Korle-Bu branch could survive but the Greater Accra branch was vibrant and so they took over the leadership from Korle-Bu branch.


The executives at that time were as follows:

Mrs. Hagar Van Percy DDNS (RTD) - Chairperson

Late Alberta Lassey - Vice chairperson

Mrs.Cecilia Wilson (rtd) - Secretary

Mrs Emelia Dowuona - Asst. Secretary

Mad. Serian Brown - Orleans Treasurer

Miss Harriet Boye - Financial secretary


At their retirement period the group was handed over to the following people:

Mrs. Georgina Nortey (nee Odame) -Chairperson/Treasurer

Miss Dela Senaya -Secretary

Miss Rosemary Quarcoo - Financial secretary

Miss Agnes Owusua - Organiser

Miss Nelly' Myers - Asst. Organiser

Miss Mercy Arthur - Welfare chairperson


These people decided that, there should be in all the regions. With the support of the former Chief Nursing Officer, (Hadja Mariama Sumani) Dr. Badu Akosah (former DGGHS), |Mrs. Alice Darkoah Asare-Allotey (GRNA President) and Madam Serian Brown - Orleans, the 1st Conference was organized in the Greater Accra Region in November, 2003. At the conference, it was agreed that, an interim executive should be elected to handle the affairs of the group. In 2005, there was a bye-election at Kumasi to elect Mrs. Gloria Aduse- Poku as secretary. Philomena Aliyer as Public Relation Officer and Seth Mezida as 2ND vice chairperson.
