The role of nurses has grown significantly throughout the 21st century. Nurses work in a variety of settings, including the hospital, the classroom, the community health department, the business sector, home health care, and the laboratory. Although each role carries different responsibilities, the primary goal of a professional nurse remains the same: to be the client’s advocate and provide optimal care based on evidence obtained through research. Nursing research is critical to the profession and necessary for advancing nursing care, influencing policy, and promoting global health (Konwar & Kalita , 2018; Tingen et al. 2009). The importance of nursing research for quality, safe, effective and efficient care of patients and their families cannot be overstated. Despite the evident relevance of nursing research, nursing involvement in multicenter research is limited (Konwar, Kalita , 2018). Some nurses have yet to understand the research process, while others have been held back by inertia or other obstacles (Chizolum, 2021). The move towards evidence-based nursing practice requires active participation by nurses at all levels along the continuum of care. Therefore, we must position nursing science as a cornerstone of population health data science. This session will highlight the importance of nursing research and examine the role of nurses in leading research, including the challenges they face, emerging opportunities, and the way forward.

Nurses for Health Equity

Nurses are at the heart of the healthcare systems. They are key players in the delivery of high-quality clinical care of individuals, families and communities and make expert contributions across policy, education and research domains. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the chief role nurses play across settings and systems in improving health outcomes on a global scale. Nurses are at the frontlines of health and social care services, merging their evidence-based, scientific and person-centred skills to meet the health and wellbeing needs of populations worldwide during times of both normalcy and crisis (Rosa et al. 2021). During the WHO 2020 Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, much international attention has been focused on how to leverage, develop, and advance these professions to achieve the SDGs and UHC. To address the challenges within health and social care systems, it is imperative to address the social determinants of health. In fact, it is well-recognized that nurses make leadership contributions toward achieving national and global health targets related to a range of health priorities, such as UHC, emergency preparedness and response, patient safety, and the SDGs. This session will explore the themes and outcomes of WISH’s most recent published report, Nurses for Health Equity: Tackling the Social Determinants of Health. The report provides clinician-level, national and international guidelines across six key domains that need our collective attention and investment: Education and Training; Monitoring and Evaluation; Working with Individuals and Communities; The Role of Healthcare Organizations as Employers, Managers, and Commissioners; Working in Partnership: Within the Health Sector and Beyond; and Nurses as Advocates.
