The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) held its 2nd Annual National Awards at the Kempinski Hotel, Gold Coast City, Accra on Friday, 17th December 2021.
The Special Guest of Honour for the occasion was Nana Nketsia V, Omanhene of Essikado Traditional area who arrived in his colourful traditional regalia supported by Nana Agya Kwamina XI, Chief Of Apremdo and Member of the Ahanta Traditional Council. In his speech, Nana Nketsia V, praised nurses and midwives for the divine work they do and congratulated the leadership of the Association for holding such a beautiful event. He called on the nursing and midwifery fraternity to foster unity and uplift the image of the professions.
The Guest of Honour, Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service was present and delivered an address in which he thanked nurses and midwives for their bravery in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and how they have reduced maternal and infant mortality and reduced the incidence of other communicable diseases. He further commended the leadership of GRNMA for situating the Union in its rightful place within the health sector space. He encouraged nurses and midwives to continue delivering the quality services they are already providing and work with other partners in achieving the target and indicators for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Universal Health Coverage.
The President of the Association, Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo in her welcome address, thanked all the invited guests for honouring the GRNMA’s invitation to the event and stressed that the main objective of the awards was to encourage nurses and midwives to give their best in terms of delivering nursing and midwifery services. She encouraged the awardees to serve as role models for the majority of nurses and midwives out there. She also called on the Ministry of Health and its Agencies to create the enabling work environment to motivate nurses and midwives to give off their best in providing quality nursing and midwifery services.
The awards presented on the night involved six main categories namely, the Regional Best Nurse/Midwife Award, Special Category Awards, National Best Nurse/Midwife Award, Sponsors Award and GRNMA 60th Anniversary Committee Award,
The highlight of the awards was the National Best Nurse/Midwife Award. The overall winner was Aisha Bawa, a midwife working at the Manhyia Government Hospital. She took home a brand new Nissan Sunny and a plaque.
The first runner up, Mr. Anthony Pulamda Gariba, a General Nurse who works at Bawku Presbyterian Hospital also took home, forty thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC40,000).
The second runner up, Christiana Adubea Koranteng, a Senior Nursing Officer (Paediatrics) who works at Shai Osudoku District Hospital, Dodowa, received thirty thousand Ghana cedis (GHC30,000).
All Regional Best Nurses and Midwives received a high spec laptop, a citation and two thousand Ghana cedis.
All awardees in the Special Category Awards received a plaque each and two thousand Ghana cedis. According to the Chairperson of the Award Selection Committee, there was no awardee for the Dr. Docia Kisseih International Award on the basis that nominees did not meet the criteria. All members of the Association, both home and abroad are encouraged to put in their nominations for the awards next year.
