Short Biography
Prof. Lydia Aziato
Prof. Lydia Aziato is the first substantive Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Ghana. She has over twenty years of professional nursing experience with specialization in Oncology Nursing. She obtained her PhD in Nursing from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa in 2013.
She holds both local and international leadership positions in professional nursing organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau International. She serves on several boards and committees and is the first nurse to be a Fellow of the Africa Science Leadership Programme. She was also the first Faculty Chairperson for the Oncology Nursing Specialist Programme in Ghana.
As of October 2021, Prof. Aziato had published over seventy peer reviewed journal articles, four edited books, two co authored books, and four book chapters, with citations exceeding nine hundred. She has supervised more than forty undergraduate students, over fifty Masters students, and five PhD candidates. She has won eleven research grants as principal or co investigator.
Her research led to the development of clinical guidelines for post operative pain management and the Colour Circle Pain Scale. She reviews for several peer reviewed journals and serves on editorial boards.

Her passion for research led to the establishment of the Research Mentorship Alliance, an NGO focused on training and mentoring nurses and midwives in research. Her primary research interests include pain, breast cancer, and women’s health.
Criteria for Nomination
- A registered member of GRNMA with valid PIN
- A minimum of 10 years working experience as a nurse or midwife
- Evidence of at least 5 publications in peer reviewed journals
- Evidence of at least 5 citations of published work
- Evidence of leading or completing at least 3 research projects relevant to nursing or midwifery
- Evidence of attendance, presentation, or facilitation at research seminars, symposia, or conferences
- Evidence of mentorship or supervision of student research
- Evidence of assessment of research reports, dissertations, or theses
- Evidence of proficiency in using data analysis software
- Evidence of contribution to policy or relevant documents in nursing or midwifery
