Short Biography

Prof. Ayodele Akiwumi

Prof. Ayodele Akiwumi was the second President of the GRNA from 1971 to 1974 and later served as President of the West African College of Nursing from 1995 to 1996. She was Editor-in-Chief of the Ghanaian Nurse Journal in 1987.

She served as Chairperson of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Ghana from 1993 to 1996 and was a Board Member of the Council from 1985 to 1988. She also served as West African Representative of the Commonwealth Nurses’ Federation from 1970 to 1974 and again from 1988 to 1999.

Prof. Akiwumi was a Member of the Inter-ministerial Committee on the Registered Colleges of Applied Arts, Science and Technology and a Member of the Professional Services Committee of the International Council of Nurses.

She instituted the Celebration of Nurses Week in 1970. She also served several terms as Head of the Department of Nursing at the University of Ghana, where she was instrumental in initiating the Bachelor’s degree in Nursing programme.

Criteria for Nomination

  1. A registered member of GRNMA with valid PIN
  2. A minimum of 5 years working experience
  3. Evidence of transformational leadership
  4. Evidence of mentorship and succession planning of staff in midwifery and leadership
  5. Evidence of contribution to policy or relevant documents or decisions or initiatives at the hospital level
  6. Evidence of voluntary midwifery service in the hospital and community
  7. Evidence of serving on committees or boards within the hospital and the community
  8. Evidence of attendance or presentation at seminars or symposia or conferences
