She was Editor-in-Chief of the Ghanaian Nurse Journal in 1987. She served as Chairperson of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Ghana from 1993 to 1996 and was a Board Member of the Council from 1985 to 1988. She also served as West African Representative of the Commonwealth Nurses\u2019 Federation from 1970 to 1974 and again from 1988 to 1999. Prof. Akiwumi was a Member of the Inter-ministerial Committee on the Registered Colleges of Applied Arts, Science and Technology and a Member of the Professional Services Committee of the International Council of Nurses. She instituted the Celebration of Nurses Week in 1970. She also served several terms as Head of the Department of Nursing at the University of Ghana, where she was instrumental in initiating the Bachelor\u2019s degree in Nursing programme.
