The 2nd Dr. Docia Kisseih memorial lecture saw in attendance many practicing nurses and midwives as well as student nurses and midwives. Many dignitaries also attended the event, amongst them were Hon. Tina Mensah, the Deputy minister of health, Mrs. Eva Mensah, the Ag. Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services and Mr. Kwame Nyanteh, the registrar of NMC. Also present were Regional Chief Nursing Officers, heads of various health facilities in Greater Accra as well some distinguished retired nurses.
The Chairperson of the event was Dr. Mary Opare, the former Ag. Dean of the School of Nursing Legon and the current head of the Nursing Department of the Central University.
The Guest Speaker was the President of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), UK, Dr. Cecilia Akrisie Anim CBE. She delivered a speech on the theme “Strengthening our Heritage, Expanding our Horizon”. Participants were called upon to commit to the profession and act professionally at all times in order to have the moral voice to call on the employer to ensure better working conditions for all nurses and midwives. She emphasized that nurses and midwives deserve better pay for the work they do and must not be continually handed with peanuts at the end of the month. She shared her life experiences in Ghana and the UK as a nurse and a midwife as well as her experiences as a union leader in the RCN.
The President of the Association, Mr. Kwaku Asante-Krobea in his address called on nurses and midwives to stay united and eshew all forms of propaganda that will lead to the fragmentation of the GRNMA. He asked midwives to recognize the fact that the GRNMA is the union that holds the collective bargaining certificate for all categories of nurses and midwives and has always negotiated for all of them without fear or favour.
The 3rd Dr. Docia Kisseih memorial lecture is scheduled to come off in 2018.
