Press Statement on Attack on Nurses and Other Health Workers at Ridge Hospital

Press Statement by the GRNMA to Condemn the Attack on Nurses and Other Health Care Workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital)

“1. We unequivocally condemn the attack on health workers, especially our nurses, who were on duty at the Emergency Unit of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital). The unprovoked and loathsome act of violence against dedicated healthcare professionals who were working tirelessly amidst the inherent system challenges is both shocking and unacceptable. Nurses serve on the frontlines of our healthcare system, often risking their well-being to provide essential health services, especially during times of crisis.

2. We want to emphasise that incidents of aggression towards medical staff undermine not only their safety but also the overall quality of care within our healthcare institutions. Such actions are a direct affront to the values of respect, compassion, and support that should govern public interactions with healthcare workers. The palpable display of affection from our Sector Minister towards the ringleader (Raiph Saint Williams) of this disgraceful act of lawlessness, in our view, only emboldens such perpetrators to repeat such acts.

3. We urge the hospital management to enhance security at the hospital at all times and ensure that the privacy of health professionals and their patients is protected. We further entreat the management of the hospital to collaborate with the Police to investigate the issue at hand.

4. We call on the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly in arresting the ring leader and his accomplices who perpetuated the violent attack on the health professionals and our nurses at the hospital within 48 hours. Failure to do so will lead to further actions by the leadership of the Association to ensure nurses working at the hospital, especially the Emergency Unit, are safe.”
