In commemoration of the 2024 international women’s day, under the theme “invest in women: accelerate progress”, the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association organized a two-day seminar from 7th to 8th of March 2024 on “building a leading career” and “how to be a potent nurse/midwife leader in Ghana’s health system. One hundred nurses and midwives participated in this even with several others who joined online, through the association’s social media platforms.
Speaking at the event, the President of GRNMA and the Chairperson for the occasion, Mrs Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo emphasized on the role of nurses and midwives in healthcare delivery. According to her, nurses and midwives contribute greatly to the healthcare and wellbeing of the global population and require support in terms of the needed modern equipment to practice, availability of medical supplies including emergency drugs, modern and comfortable work environments for our patients and ourselves, career progression, better remuneration and better conditions of service among many others. She highlighted the stands of PSI on its six key principles for strengthening care systems, which have the potential to improve women’s lives such as; public funding of care, public delivery, public stewardship, public transparency and accountability, decent work and pay, and dignity in care, which will safeguard provision of quality health services.
In delivering the keynote address, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, a Human Rights Lawyer and Activists, touched on how investing in women in education, health and gender-based violence has helped to progress and advance the cause of women, especially in protecting women’s rights. She added that investment in girls’ education is key for any developing country. It leads to economic empowerment because it provides women better employment opportunities and higher wages.
The guest speaker, Brigadier General Anita Asmah, Dir. Gen. GHQ(DCE) Burma Camp, touched on the roles of women in society. She reiterated that medical professionals including nurses and midwives, need to display professionalism and self-discipline to deal with the myriad of individuals they come across with on daily basis. Whiles doing so, she advised that nurses and midwives capitalize on the available support systems to improve on personal and mental health.
Following these speeches, was a panel discussion, which sort to address some of the concerns and provide answers to thought provoking questions of women in society.
