GRNMA @ 65, A LEGACY OF CARE, A FUTURE OF EXCELLENCE

A road down memory lane.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), originally known as the Ghana Registered Nurses’ Association (GRNA), has played a pivotal role in shaping the nursing and midwifery professions in Ghana from 1960 to present.

Established in March 1960 through the merger of the Qualified Nurses Association, led by Mr. Mettle-Nunoo and the State Registered Nurses Association, led by Dr. Docia Kisseih, the GRNMA, aimed to unify nurses under one central organization to advance their interests both nationally and internationally.

Following its formation, the GRNMA focused on consolidating the nursing profession in Ghana. Dr. Docia Kisseih, the first president, played a significant role in setting the foundation for the association’s future endeavours. During these decades, the GRNMA worked towards improving the standards of nursing education and practice, advocating for better working conditions, and ensuring that nurses received the recognition they deserved within the healthcare system

In 2007, the association expanded its scope by officially registering the Ghana Nurse and Midwife Trainees Association, reflecting its commitment to supporting professionals from their training years through their careers.
This period also saw the GRNMA intensifying its efforts in professional development, organizing continuous education programs, workshops, and conferences to keep its members updated with advancements in nursing and midwifery practices.
